Creative Links 41: Daily Mini Videos, Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone, and Meditation

Raindrops on yellow leaf

Each week I share a few links to things that have caught my interest online. They often include things about photography and drawing but are usually a bit more varied than that. Here’s my selection for this week – I hope you enjoy!

  • I’ve never really made videos but I found these Daily Mini Time Capsule videos by Xanthe made me want to give it a go.
  • Along the same lines as what I wrote on Tuesday, the Sketchbook Skool blog has a post about getting out of your comfort zone.
  • I’ve been thinking recently about starting to meditate daily again by setting aside a specific time each day just for this, so I enjoyed what Peter Taylor had to say about meditation and noise.
  • The fact that the Helsinki Art Museum re-opened this week and that there will be a Tove Jansson exhibition there made me want to go back to the city for a visit. It’s a long time since I was there.
  • I discovered a blog by a fellow sketcher, Alice, this week and it was comforting to read that I’m not alone in my nervousness about drawing in public sometimes.

The time capsule videos are ace! I like the idea of doing one each week over the weekend. Thanks for sharing Cathryn.

Hi Milo. They’re great aren’t they? And something I could imagine you doing. Glad you enjoyed it!

Hi Cathryn! As somebody who struggles with traditional meditation, I loved what the Daily Zen writer had to say about it: “The work of meditation is the work of existing among distractions.” That’s food for thought for me. Thanks for sharing great links, as always.

Hi Joy. I did 8 weeks of daily ‘traditional’ meditation a while ago and some days/weeks were easier than others. I found the week that involved 2 meditations a day difficult and I don’t think that forcing myself through that was necessarily the best plan because it became stressful! So yes, I like the idea of being able to exist among noise and distractions and finding meditative moments in everyday life, no matter how chaotic things might seem.

I really enjoyed the mini time capsules, the reflection on meditation and noise (so true!), and the comfort zones one. Especially the comfort zones. I so very much enjoy being at home in my little bubble; I need these reminders to expand and explore. Thanks for the links!

Hi Monica! I’m glad you liked these links. Like you, I often need a little nudge to explore beyond my comfort zone – it’s so easy to get stuck in rut. And yes, the videos are lovely. My friend, Milo, who also commented on this post has since made his own version which is on his Instagram (@milomc) so you might like that too :).
