Nature Studies

Sketches of ducks

Just before lunch today I popped outside with my sketchbook to get another Boot Kamp assignment done for Sketchbook Skool.

This one was about studying nature. Not so much about producing a pretty finished picture but more about looking at a living subject from different angles and observing their behaviour.

There are lots of birds around here, including some ducks, moorhens and coots living on a couple of small lakes right next to my home so they seemed like the obvious choice for this.

I started with the ducks. There were two standing/sitting a short distance from me with their heads tucked in, having a rest. I managed to sketch another pair before the female wandered off. The male then swam up to the resting pair and quacked at them but they weren’t having any of it and just turned around and went back to sleep.

Sketches of a coot

Just as I was finishing off this little coot came swimming by quite quickly so I got a few quick sketches of him down too.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would but it was a bit colder than I’d expected so it was nice to get back indoors. I think I’ve found a nice quiet spot close to home for some outdoor sketching now though.

Thank you Dale! I think adding some colour to them really made a difference.

Absolutely love these, especially as you’ve created a story with a few words directly as part of the pictures.
